As part of our Regulatory Proposal Reset Engagement for the 2025-2030 period, SA Power Networks engaged with the Afghan (Pashtun and Dari) Communities to hold discussions about their access to, current needs, and future priorities for electricity in the State. The engagement workshop was held on April 11, 2022, at the Ottoway Football Club Rooms. The session was held during the Holy month of Ramadan, with the group breaking off for prayer and meal.

In preparation for the workshop, a scoping discussion was held with Uzair Safi from the Pashtun Community to ensure the methodology was appropriate and accessible and that the community's expectations for the session were understood and the focus group was designed accordingly.

Who did we engage

Twenty-three people attended the workshop, consisting of 20 men, two women, and one child. Participants hailing from the Pashtun and Dari language groups, spanning a wide age range were consulted, in facilitation with Melanie Lambert from Think Human. A language interpreter was used throughout the session to assist with the conversation and presentation and to ensure everyone's views were heard.

What we engaged on

Participants were provided with a background on the role SA Power Networks plays within the operations of the electricity network. This prompted participants to discuss their use, current and future needs concerns, and barriers concerning electricity. What did we learn

The key themes which emerged from our discussion with the community centred around:

  • Information - Community members requested detailed information on the pricing of electricity and guidance on reducing costs.
  • Safety - In-depth discussions were held about the safety and maintenance of the network around houses and trees.
  • Costs - The community requested additional resources to gain clarity in understanding their bills and options for reducing costs.
