As part of our Regulatory Proposal Reset Engagement for the 2025-2030 period, SA Power Networks engaged with the Italian Community to hold discussions about their access to, current needs, and future priorities for electricity in the State. The engagement workshop was held in person on April 14, 2022, at the Italian Community Hall in Payneham. The session was planned to end in time for a shared lunch, provided by the community.

In preparation for the workshop, a scoping discussion was held with Anna Sheridan from the community to ensure the methodology was appropriate and accessible and that the community's expectations for the session were understood and the focus group was designed accordingly.

Who did we engage

Seventeen members of the Italian community attended the workshop, including seven men and ten women. All participants belonged to an older demographic, ranging in age from approximately 60 years old and upwards. All participants were homeowners with eight having solar PV installed in their homes. Melanie Lambert from Think Human facilitated the workshop. The group was designed with the community to ensure their needs were met regarding interpreters, materials, and expectations of the participants.

SA Power Networks was represented at the workshop by Mark Vincent and Jessica Vonthethoff, Executive General Managers along with the members of the Stakeholder Engagement Team.

What we engaged on

Participants were provided with a background on the role SA Power Networks plays within the operations of the electricity network. This prompted participants to discuss their use, current and future needs concerns, and barriers concerning electricity. What were our key learnings

The key themes which emerged from our engagement with the community included:

  • Customer Service and access to information, with members of the community in favour of direct, personal, and quick communication.
  • Reliability of the network, with a keen emphasis on interruptions and their quick resolution.
  • Solar and sustainability emerged as a theme important to the community with a high rate of solar uptake.
  • Equity and pricing were discussed, with concerns raised about the increased prices and ensuring affordable electricity for vulnerable customers.
  • Trust, with the community informing us that they were unsure who to trust in the electricity sector, especially the retailers and installers.
