Our response to helping vulnerable customers

Access to essential services, such as electricity, is necessary to sustain the health and wellbeing of our community. The affordability of energy is an issue across Australia and is influenced by a range of factors.

There are a number of ways energy companies can support vulnerable customers and SA Power Networks is committed to working with our Community Reference Group to understand customer needs and ensure the customer voice is considered and heard in our decision-making.

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) works to make all Australian energy consumers better off, now and in the future.

The AER regulates electricity networks and covered gas pipelines, in all jurisdictions except Western Australia. The AER sets the amount of revenue that network businesses can recover from customers for using these networks.

The AER enforces the laws for the National Electricity Market and spot gas markets in southern and eastern Australia. The AER also monitors and reports on the conduct of market participants and the effectiveness of competition.

The AER also protects the interests of household and small business consumers by enforcing the Retail Law. The retail energy market functions cover New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and Queensland. The AER sets standing offer prices small business and residential customers pay in areas where there is no other retail price regulation – South Australia, New South Wales and south-east Queensland (Energex).

Energy affordability, reducing emissions and the transition to a cleaner energy system, reliability and ensuring equitable access to energy for all Australians have been identified as key priorities for the community. Ensuring that the community has confidence in energy businesses is critical to delivering the energy system that Australia needs for the future.

In early 2018, a number of Australian energy businesses across the supply chain came together to develop the Energy Charter, recognising that better customer outcomes required a whole of industry approach.

The Energy Charter articulates a vision for the energy industry and the high-level principles and principles in action that energy businesses should embed in order to deliver on that vision. The principles are common for all businesses in the energy industry, irrespective of where they sit in the supply chain, and apply equally to conventional and new energy businesses.

While SA Power is currently not a signatory to the Energy Charter, our Customer Strategy and Vulnerable Customer Strategy, align to the five principles outlined in the Charter.
