Public Lighting Industry Forum

On 22 October 2024, SA Power Networks held a forum with representatives from Council, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) and the Local Government Association (LGA). Information was presented about our Regulatory Reset Submission, Smart and Decorative Lighting and the Public Lighting Portal enhancements. AEMO presented on the recent rule change about integrated metering and ESCoSA provided information about the Public Lighting Framework changes.

Attendees were fortunate to also receive an informative presentation from Alexandrina Council's James Horwood and Mark Tate regarding their smart lighting project in Clayton Bay. It was a great lesson in the importance of early and robust community engagement with a solution provided through innovative technology that benefitted residents who enjoy one of the darkest places in South Australia.

Chris Tugwell, Chair of Mid-Murray Landcare also attended to provide more information about the importance of dark places in our environment. Chris and his team are pioneers in this area and were instrumental in International Dark Sky accreditation awarded to an area just outside of Mannum in South Australia's River Murray region. With a darkness measure of 21.9 (out of 22.0), it is truly a wonderful place for star gazing and to recognise the importance of natural light impacts on native flora and fauna.

Further information has been requested regarding AEMO's integrated metering rule change, other smart metering projects that councils are developing and SA Power Network's process and timeframes to progress smart lighting technology. This will be provided as soon as possible via Talking Power.

SA Power Networks would like to thank all the presenters and attendees for a well-received opportunity to discuss all things lighting and we look forward to holding another forum in 2025.

If any of the above topics are of interest to you, please either comment below or contact Erin Hampton on 0409 670 184 or via email on erin.hampton@sapowernetworks.com.au.
