Alexandra Fry, recipient of the 2025 Kelvin Trimper Scholarship, has delivered two significant bodies of work that support South Australians in improving home energy efficiency and climate resilience.
Climate Resilient Homes in South Australia
Based on Alex’s field experience as a Residential Scorecard assessor, this article explores practical ways households can create a climate‑resilient space, a dedicated area within the home that can remain safe and comfortable during heatwaves or cold snaps without requiring major renovation.
Using a featured property from Sustainable House Day 2025, Alex demonstrates how simple zoning, efficient heating and cooling, appropriate window coverings, and thoughtful design can dramatically improve comfort and energy performance. She also highlights community resources, council programs, and examples of public spaces supporting residents during extreme heat.

Energy Efficiency Case Study
Alex also created a detailed case study documenting the journey of an Adelaide rental home upgraded as part of the scholarship project.
After undertaking a Scorecard Assessment, Alex worked with the household and suppliers to implement energy‑efficiency improvements, culminating in the property achieving an impressive 10‑star Scorecard rating—up from 6.6 stars initially.
This case study was shared nationally through the Victorian Government Scorecard Assessor Network.
On the 2025 Sustainable House Day open event, local businesses and community groups supported the showcase, providing practical advice to visitors and demonstrating accessible energy upgrades for South Australian homes
