The Appropriate Species Selection Committee has been formed to develop and provide advice on long-term strategy for appropriate species near powerlines.

Established in 2014 by SA Power Networks, the Committee aims to review and endorse changes to the approved list of species planted near powerlines.

The Committee means bi-monthly and undertakes research to trial new and suitable species for planting under powerlines, while working collaboratively together and providing expert advice for appropriate species selection.

The Committee includes participation from a number of key stakeholders, including but not limited to:

  • Kelvin Trimper, AM, Arborist Reference Group/Green Adelaide (Chair)
  • Tim Johnson, Treenet
  • Dr. Leonie Scriven, Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium of SA, Department of Environment & Water
  • James Peters, Green Adelaide
  • Henry Haavisto, Campbelltown City Council
  • Katherine Russell, Local Government Association
  • Marcus Lodge, Arborman (providing independent arboriculture advice and expertise)
  • Kim Syrus, Nursery and Garden Industry of SA
  • Prof. Robert Hill, Adelaide University
  • Alex Czura, SA Water
  • Ian Furness, Office of the Technical Regulator
  • Kev Connell, SA Power Networks
  • Patrice Pearson, SA Power Networks
  • Other parties/individuals as identified and endorsed by the Advisory Committee

SA Power Networks recognises the approved species lists require greater diversity to meet the challenges of the future regarding climate change.

“We have made significant progress but we are continuing to seek improved outcomes for the community and environment for trees under powerlines. One of our latest initiatives is to trial new tree species under powerlines which deliver good visual and environmental amenity whilst reducing the need for regular pruning”. - Kelvin Trimper, Chair
